Polyporus also called Lumpy Bracket and Polypore Umbrella, is a relatively unknown edible mushroom, but is highly valued in Asia since it contains very effective medicinal substances. Analyses have shown that Polyporus owes its beneficial effects particularly to polyporusterones A and B. It also contains considerable amounts of calcium, potassium, iron, but very little sodium. Trace elements such as manganese, zinc and copper have also been found.

About Polyporus

Polyporus (Grifola umbellata, Polyporus umbellatus) is a relatively rare fungus belonging to the Polyporaceae family; it’s considered to be a vulnerable fungus (IUCN Red List). Polyporus can be found on tree roots and stumps from which its nutrients are taken. Polyporus fruiting bodies are up to 40 cm wide, made up of many branches of scaly caps.

Apart from the fact that Polyporus is a tasty edible mushroom suitable for pickling, it has also been a part of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Polyporus was first described in 1801 by Christian H. Persoon in ‘western countries’. Polyporus contains many effective substances, such as vitamins and minerals, polysaccharides – beta-glucans, ergosterols – polyporusterones A-E, ergostenones, steroids, anthraquinones, nucleosides, D-mannitol.
