About Lion’s mane

Hericium (Hericium erinaceus, also known as Lion’s mane) is one of the edible Basidiomycota medicinal mushrooms originating in Asia, it’s also found in abundance in North America. Hericium is rarely found in the Czech Republic. The mushroom got its name from the unique shape of the fruiting body which is spherical and branched and can be up to 30 cm in diameter.

The effect of Hericium on nerve growth factor (NGF) production is currently being investigated. Like other medicinal mushrooms, Hericium is rich in polysaccharides – beta-glucans, minerals, trace elements; diterpenoids – hericenones and erinacines – are specific for it. Other important substances contained in Hericium are palmitic acid, sugar alcohol, threitol and D-arabinitol or provitamin D2, etc. The concentration of polysaccharides in the extract is also important. Through long-term testing, it has been discovered that 30% is optimal for therapeutic purposes. Lower concentrations (10%) are less effective, higher concentrations (40%) are always at the expense of other active substances, and the effect of a particular mushroom is shifted.
